Inviting Others Along For The Journey

A few years ago, someone asked me to share the names of people I had discipled.  After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, I shared that while I could identify lots of folks I had engaged with in worship, education classes, and small groups over the years, I couldn’t honestly say that I had discipled anyone!  As a pastor, this question got me thinking and I realized that Jesus invested most of his time with 12 people. Then I began to wonder what would happen if I invested my time in a similar way?

Matthew 28:16-20 says this:

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

I knew that making disciples must be important if Jesus gave us this command, but what would it look like practically? Maybe the best place to start was by looking at how Jesus interacted with his very own disciples - inviting people to live everyday life with him.

Matthew 4: 18-20

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

For Jesus’ disciples, the very first step was to drop what they were doing and follow their friend, trusting that he would take care of them. Who are the people in your life that you find saying ‘yes’ when you invite them to things? Who are the people that make time for you during the week? Maybe it’s an unlikely few… Jesus’ disciples were definitely a rag-tag group!
